Details of Sacra Liturgia 2015 USA Announced

From June 1-4, 2015, an international conference
on liturgical formation in light of the new evangelization
will be held in New York, under the title:

SACRA LITURGIA USA 2015
CULMEN ET FONS VITÆ ET MISSIONIS ECCLESIÆ

Continuing the initiative of Sacra Liturgia 2013, organized by Bishop Dominique Rey (Fréjus-Toulon, France) in Rome, this conference seeks to support the Churchs saving evangelistic and catechetical mission, as well as the continued revitalization of the liturgical life of the Church, especially in the United States.

The sacred liturgy plays a central, vital role in the new evangelization, attracting souls to the heart of Christ and His Church. For the baptized, the sacred liturgy resides at the heart of the Christian faith and life indeed it is the source and summit of the life and mission of the Church. As Bishop Rey stated at the opening of the 2013 conference in Rome, The sacred liturgy is not a hobby for specialists. It is central to all our endeavors as disciples of Jesus Christ. This profound reality cannot be overemphasized. We must recognize the primacy of grace in our Christian life and work, and we must respect the reality that in this life the optimal encounter with Christ is in the Sacred Liturgy.

The conference brings together a wide range of renowned international speakers including Raymond Cardinal Burke; Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone (San Francisco); Dom Phillip Anderson, OSB (Abbot of Clear Creek Monastery); and Dom Alcuin Reid (Monastère Saint-Benoît, Diocese of Fréjus-Toulon, France); among others. See the appendix for a complete list of speakers and topics.

Topics addressed at the conference will range from broad subjects like the relationship between liturgy and culture, Catholic identity, youth, the arts, and Catholic education to specific questions like the mid-20th-century changes to Holy Week and the post-Vatican-II reform of the calendar and lectionary. Lectures will take place at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (68th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues) which is conveniently located at a subway stop.

The conference lectures will be augmented by working sessions for those in Catholic higher education. Sponsored by The Cardinal Newman Society, the sessions will facilitate a conversation about renewing the liturgical life of Catholic colleges and universities to support the intellectual and moral formation of students and faculty in the Faith.

At the heart of the conference are the liturgical celebrations. There will be Solemn Vespers in the usus antiquior, a Sung Mass in the Dominican rite, and Solemn Pontifical Masses in the usus recentior and usus antiquior. The Solemn Pontifical Mass in the usus antiquior on the feast of Corpus Christi, celebrated on Thursday, June 4th, will be followed by a Eucharistic procession in the streets of New York. Liturgies will be held at the Church of Saint Catherine of Siena (411 E 68th Street), a beautiful Dominican parish on the Upper East Side.

With the prestigious lineup of speakers, as well as the beautiful liturgies planned, those attending the conference will come away with a rich experience of the intellectual heritage and liturgical life of the Catholic faith. The serious intellectual inquiry into the sacred liturgy will prove fruitful for both academics and laymen alike. Attendees will meet Catholics from all over the world, and be afforded the opportunity to build good working relationships with others of those seeking to deepen their love of Christ through the Churchs liturgy, and to continue their work for liturgical renewal.
Approximately 300 participants are expected. Registrations for the whole conference will open on January 1, 2015, and part-time registrations will be possible beginning at Easter. More information about registration, affordable housing, and locations is available at the conference website.

The conference is being organized by Rev. Richard Cipolla, Ph.D., D. Phil (Oxon.) and Jennifer Donelson, D.M.A. Media inquiries may be made to contact@sacraliturgiausa.org.

The organizers are grateful to His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan for his kind permission to hold this conference in the Archdiocese of New York, as well as the gracious welcome of the Dominican friars and staff at Saint Catherine of Siena Church. This event could not take place without the generous support of the conference sponsors: the Knights of Columbus, The Cardinal Newman Society, de Montfort Music, Regina Magazine, Granda, Cantica Nova Publications, the Society of St. Hugh of Cluny, and the Church of Saint Catherine of Siena.

Message of Bishop Dominique Rey
for the announcement of Sacra Liturgia USA 2015

Toulon, France – 8th December 2014

Bishop Dominique Rey, Bishop of Fréjus-Toulon, France, has welcomed the announcement of Sacra Liturgia USA 2015. “I am delighted at this initiative, which we began in Rome with Sacra Liturgia 2013, and which continues the work of fostering a greater appreciation of the fundamental role of liturgical formation and celebration for the mission of the Church in the twenty-first century,” he said.

“As the Second Vatican Council taught, ‘the Sacred Liturgy is the source and summit of life and mission of the Church.’ Our first duty is the worship of Almighty God. Thus, if unjustly we do not give the liturgy its primary place in Christian life or if our liturgical celebrations are somehow not as they should be, the New Evangelisation will be impeded. The urgent work of bringing people to Christ, or of bringing them back to the practice of their Catholic faith, will suffer. That is why we must begin with getting right liturgical formation and celebration,” Bishop Rey continued.

“I am profoundly grateful to His Eminence, Cardinal Dolan, for so readily welcoming Sacra Liturgia USA 2015 to the Archdiocese of New York,” Bishop Rey said, “and to the organisers and speakers who have already done so much to prepare what will be an important opportunity for liturgical formation for all involved in the Church’s ministry."

"May God bless this new Sacra Liturgia initiative. May it bear much fruit in the United States of America, and beyond!”

Intervention of Mgr. Dominique Rey, Bishop of Fréjus-Toulon, France

Your Eminences, Your Excellencies, dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

It is my great pleasure to welcome you this evening. In June 2013 many of you were amongst the more than three hundred people from over thirty countries around the world at the Pontifical University, Santa Croce, for the international conference Sacra Liturgia 2013. Over four days we listened to scholarly presentations from nineteen cardinals, bishops and other experts in the Sacred Liturgy. Also, and perhaps more importantly, we prayed together in both the usus recentior and the usus antiquior of the Roman rite. And we joined with the Holy Father, as a sign of our Catholic unity with and under Peter, in celebrating the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul with him at St Peter’s Basilica.

Those days were privileged and grace-filled, and their spirit – a spirit of authentic liturgical celebration and formation so as to sustain the life and mission of all of Christ’s faithful – has inspired further Sacra Liturgia initiatives. Dom Alcuin will speak of these in detail later.

It is important to emphasise, once again, the intrinsic link between the faithful celebration of the Church’s liturgy as the Church hands it on to us – in both its newer and older forms – and the mission of the Church in this time when we are all called to participate in the New Evangelisation. If our seminarians and priests and all others involved in liturgical ministry lack a sound liturgical formation, our liturgical celebrations will not be the optimal encounter with Christ in His Church that they should be. Christ’s faithful will not be nourished as well as they should be. Their Christian lives and mission will suffer. That is why the Second Vatican Council insisted that the Sacred Liturgy is the source and summit of the life and mission of the Church (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10). As a bishop, it is my duty to do all that I can to promote the New Evangelisation. If the very source of our Christian life – the Sacred Liturgy – is somehow not as it should be the New Evangelisation will be impeded. That is why we must begin with getting liturgical formation and celebration right.

Tonight we are here to present the English and Italian editions of the Proceedings of Sacra Liturgia 2013. I wish to express my thanks to Ignatius Press and Edizioni Cantagalli for publishing them, and to Dom Alcuin for his work in editing the volumes.

It is my hope that this book will do much to assist in the liturgical formation of seminarians and others, and that it will promote a well-founded liturgical renewal amongst clergy and other liturgical ministers throughout the Church. Each of the chapters of this volume is motivated by a profound love of the Sacred Liturgy. The different authors have given us the benefits of their intellectual expertise, certainly. The authors have also opened their hearts to us, and have shared with us the fruits of their encounter with the spirit of the liturgy, which is the basis of their own Christian lives. This is a book which can teach us a great deal. It can also inspire and move us to have a greater “zeal for God’s house” (cf. Ps. 69:9), which is proper to Christian life.

I encourage you to make this book known amongst clergy, seminarians, religious and all those involved in liturgical ministry. I hope that in due course it will be available in other languages also – even one day in French!

I wish to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to His Eminence, Cardinal Burke, for his support of Sacra Liturgia 2013, for his support of the ongoing Sacra Liturgia initiatives, and most especially for his presence here with us this evening. Your Eminence, we are in your debt – thank you.

Thank you to the speakers from Sacra Liturgia 2013 who are present here this evening. Amongst those who expressed their regret at being unable to be present I would like to mention His Eminence, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and His Excellency, Bishop Peter Elliott.

Finally, it is my pleasant duty to reiterate my thanks to all of the sponsors of Sacra Liturgia 2013, and most particularly to the Knights of Columbus whose continuing support has facilitated both this evening’s presentation and the continuing initiatives of Sacra Liturgia.

Thank you. May God bless you.

Eminenze, Eccellenze, cari fratelli e sorelle in Cristo,

Photo © CNA Petrik Bohumil

Grazie. Che Dio vi benedica.

Intervention of Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke

Your Eminences, Your Excellencies, Reverend Monsignors and Fathers, Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am pleased to offer words of profound appreciation for the publication, both in English and in Italian, of the Proceedings of the International Conference on the Sacred Liturgy Sacra Liturgia 2013, celebrated in the City from the 25th to the 28th of June in 2013. Above all, I express sincerest thanks to His Excellency, the Most Reverend Dominique Rey, Bishop of Fréjus-Toulon in France, for his inspiration and persevering leadership which have been essential to the realization of the important and formidable work of the Conference and to the public presentation of the good fruits of the work today, so that what was accomplished during the days of the International Conference may reach an always larger audience. Thanking His Excellency, I thank also Dom Alcuin Reid, the General Editor of the Proceedings, for his highly qualified work which has reached a milestone in the publication of the fine editions which we are celebrating today.

At the same time, the publishing houses, Edizioni Cantagalli and Ignatius Press, are to be congratulated for the fine editions of a challenging book in the sense that it is the work of 19 authors, as Bishop Rey has reminded us. I wish to recognize with particular gratitude the authors, among whom I am honored to count myself, because, as is clear, the great good which the publication of the proceedings represents depends totally on the high quality of the individual contributions. My heartfelt thanks to all who have contributed to the publication of the Proceedings in English and in Italian.

It is a source of singular satisfaction for me to support and sustain, in some small manner, the initiative of Bishop Rey which is called simply and correctly “Sacra Liturgia”, in the sense that it is directed at the liturgical reform mandated by the Fathers of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. “Sacra Liturgia” accomplished its first important work with the International Conference in June of 2013, but the work, God willing and assisting, will continue with other conferences in different parts of the world to promote the true reform of the Sacred Liturgy, the heart of the organic life of the Church. Such reform, as Pope Benedict XVI so wisely taught is brought about not through rupture with the past, not through revolution, but through continuity with the past, through respect for the sublime beauty of the Sacred Liturgy celebrated uninterruptedly along the Christian centuries. If the Sacred Liturgy is the heart of the life of the Church, and indeed it is, the implications of correct liturgical reform for the teaching of sound doctrine and of right discipline should escape no one.

The fact is that the liturgical reform, as it was implemented immediately after the Council, was marked to a significant degree by the rupture of the so-called “spirit of the Council” and not by the continuity contained in the teaching itself of the Council. Blessed Pope Paul VI, Pope Saint John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, as the Roman Pontiffs of the post-Conciliar period, who were endowed with the experience of intense participation in the work of the Council, all confronted the great need of a true reform of the Sacred Liturgy in the Church in continuity with the Tradition. We think, for example, of Blessed Pope Paul VI’s homily for the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul in 1972, Pope Saint John Paul II’s Encyclical Letter Ecclesia de Eucharistia, and Pope Benedict XVI’s  Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum. Thanks be to God, much progress toward the true reform of the Sacred Liturgy has already been made, but there is yet much work to do.

With these brief reflections I wish to express the hope that the publication of the Proceedings of “Sacra Liturgia 2013” which we celebrate today and the continued work of “Sacra Liturgia”, under the direction of His Excellency, Bishop Rey, with the help of Dom Alcuin Reid, may contribute to the true liturgical reform desired by the Fathers of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. May God continue to bless the work of “Sacra Liturgia” for the good of the universal Church.

Eminenze, Eccellenze, Reverendi Monsignori e Padri, Stimati Signori:

Intervention of Dom Alcuin Reid

Your Eminences, Your Excellencies, Reverend Fathers, ladies and gentlemen:

For those who speak of changing “fashions” in the Church, in the last pontificate the question of the Sacred Liturgy was definitely seen as being very much “in fashion” whereas seemingly, in this pontificate, it is somewhat “out of fashion”.
Of course, nothing could be further than the truth in respect of the very nature of the Catholic Church or indeed of the person of the Holy Father himself (see: See: Alejandro Bermudez, “Pope Francis and the Liturgy” National Catholic Register, 5 November 2013; http://www.ncregister.com/dai…/pope-francis-and-the-liturgy/; Pope Francis, “Message to the Participants of the Symposium ‘Sacrosanctum Concilium: Gratitude and Commitment to a Great Ecclesial Movement’”, 18 February 2014).
For, as the Second Vatican Council teaches, “the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows. For the aim and object of apostolic works is that all who are made sons of God by faith and baptism should come together to praise God in the midst of His Church, to take part in the sacrifice, and to eat the Lord's supper” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10).
And further, that “every liturgical celebration, because it is an action of Christ the priest and of His Body which is the Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others; no other action of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same title and to the same degree” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 7).
That is why the Sacred Liturgy is central to—no, literally fundamental to—Christian life and mission in the world. That is why “the true celebration of the Sacred Liturgy is the centre of any renewal of the Church whatever” (Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, cited in: Roberto de Mattei, “Reflections on the Liturgical Reform” in A. Reid (ed.) Looking Again at the Question of the Liturgy with Cardinal Ratzinger, St Michael’s Abbey Press, Farnborough 2003, pp. 130-144, p. 141).
It is to this reality that the published proceedings of Sacra Liturgia 2013 bear witness. I wish to express my gratitude to the editorial teams at Ignatius Press and Edizioni Cantagalli for their hard work in providing us with this important resource for authentic liturgical formation and renewal so promptly.
Bishop Rey has asked me to speak about Sacra Liturgia and its future initiatives. Sacra Liturgia promotes:
- An authentic interpretation of the Second Vatican Council’s mandate for liturgical reform.
- An assessment of the implementation of Sacrosanctum Concilium that is faithful to the Council.
- An ongoing consideration of the value of a possible reform of the reform.
- The integral celebration of the usus recentior with an optimal ars celebrandi (cf. Sacramentum Caritatis, 38-42).
- An openness to the value and riches of the usus antiquior in the Church today.
In some ways these may be seen as pathways for the “new liturgical movement” spoken of in recent decades, of the movement “towards the right way of celebrating the liturgy, inwardly and outwardly” in the Church of the twenty-first century (Cf. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, The Spirit of the Liturgy, Ignatius Press, San Francisco 2000, pp. 8-9). These are inclusive pathways open to all that is good and true in respect of the nature of the Sacred Liturgy. And they are realistic ones— recognising that in the past 50 years the liturgical life of the Church has seen what St John Paul II described as both “lights” and “shadows” (cf. Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 17 April 2003, n. 10).
In accordance with these aims a number of initiatives are planned. From 1-4 June 2015 Sacra Liturgia USA—a four day academic conference including liturgical celebrations—will be held in New York City. From 4-19 July 2015 a second Sacra Liturgia Summer School will be held in La Garde-Freinet, in Provence, France, providing opportunities for practical and academic formation, prayer, pilgrimage and rest in the south of France.
Further details of these initiatives are available at www.sacraliturgia.org.
A Lithuanian translation of the Proceedings of Sacra Liturgia 2013 is also in preparation by the Arche Foundation. We very much hope that other language translations of this book and other conferences in different countries are possible in the future.
The aim and purpose of the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy is stated clearly in its article 14: to bring about the “full and active participation by all the people” in the Sacred Liturgy—which, borrowing words from St Pius X, the Council teaches is “the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit”. The same article concludes with the stark assertion that “it would be futile to entertain any hopes of realizing this” unless first all become “thoroughly imbued with the spirit and power of the liturgy” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 14).
Over fifty years after the promulgation of Sacrosanctum Concilium are our clergy, religious and lay people “thoroughly imbued with the spirit and power of the liturgy”? I submit that this remains to be achieved and is in fact an urgent and necessary duty today. Indeed, as Pope Francis asserted in February of this year: “Much remains to be done for a correct and complete assimilation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy on the part of the baptized and by ecclesial communities. I refer in particular to the commitment to a strong and organic initiation and liturgical formation of the lay faithful as well as the clergy and consecrated persons” (Pope Francis, “Message”, 18 February 2014).
Sacra Liturgia 2013 sought to contribute to this crucial work of liturgical formation and its published proceedings are an important resource for precisely that. We hope and pray that our future initiatives shall serve further to immerse people in the spirit and power of the Sacred Liturgy so that they may draw ever more deeply and fruitfully from the very source and summit of the life and mission of the Church in their particular vocations.
Thank you.
Eminenze, Eccellenze, Reverendi Padri, Signore e Signori,
Grazie!
